Nalbandian, Moya land in Estoril quarters

    David Nalbandian
David Nalbandian bested Jeremy Chardy 6-1, 7-6 (7-0) during the second round at the Estoril Open.
Estoril, Portugal (Sports Network) - Former titlists David Nalbandian and Carlos Moya were among Thursday's second-round winners at the clay-court Estoril Open.

The top-seeded Nalbandian, who captured this event in 2002, got past French lucky-loser Jeremy Chardy 6-1, 7-6 (7-0), while the sixth-seeded Moya, the 2000 champ here, topped Argentine qualifier Gustavo Marcaccio 6-1, 7-5 on Day 4.

The 2005 Tennis Masters Cup titlist Nalbandian will face Portuguese wild card Frederico Gil in Friday's quarterfinals, while Moya will encounter his fellow Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

The heavy crowd favorite Gil upended fifth-seeded Russian Dmitry Tursunov 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, while Garcia-Lopez outlasted Argentine Carlos Berlocq in a marathon bout, 6-7 (11-13), 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).

Friday's other quarters will pit second-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko against Luxembourg's Gilles Muller and Spaniard Albert Portas versus American Justin Gimelstob. Davydenko titled here in 2003.

    Young guns climb ATP ladder

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Instead of talking about the Roger Federers, the Rafael Nadals and the Andy Roddicks of the world this week, let's take a look at a few of the quiet young climbers on the ATP tour.

Since the 2006 season got underway back in January, five men have shot up at least 34 spots on the rankings chart, including youngsters Nicolas Almagro, Kristof Vliegen and Marcos Baghdatis. The other two are tour veterans Luis Horna of Peru and Nicolas Massu of Chile.
